Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Nutrition and Chronic Disease


The Department of Health Sciences and Technology (www.hest.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position. The new assistant professor will be an integral part of the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health, IFNH (www.ifnh.ethz.ch), which is the only university institute in Switzerland where research and teaching in all aspects of food, nutrition and health sciences takes place.

Chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease have become a health concern in both the industrialised and emerging economies of the world. This position reflects the increased scientific and public interest in the relationship between food, nutrition and chronic disease, and helps to strengthen the research and teaching activities of the department in those areas.

The assistant professor will focus on the mechanisms that link food and nutrition patterns to prevention of chronic disease. She or he is expected to lead a world-class research programme in that respective area and should apply state-of-the-art technologies with a major focus on human studies, which might be complemented by studying underlying mechanisms in animal models. This requires an in-depth understanding of how nutrition affects human metabolism and plays a role in disease development. Commitment to teaching and the ability to lead a research group are required.

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Food Immunology


The Department of Health Sciences and Technology (www.hest.ethz.ch) of ETH Zurich and its Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health, IFNH (www.ifnh.ethz.ch), invites applications for the above-mentioned position which reflects the importance of the relationship between food, nutrition and chronic disease, and the essential role of immunology in the health, medical and food science areas in the department.

The successful candidate will lead a competitive research programme focusing on mucosal immunology and addressing mechanisms that link food and nutrition with the structure, function and development of the human immune system. A desired approach involves hypothesis-driven basic molecular and systems-oriented research inspired by clinical/societal problems and potentially validated with translational research. The new assistant professor should apply state-of-the-art cellular and molecular biological approaches, potentially including the generation and analysis of model organisms. A translational approach including collaborations with theoretical and experimental groups at ETH Zurich and at the University Hospital Zurich is desired. Professor or Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Analog and Mixed Signal Interfaces

The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong and visible research programme in the area of analog and mixed signal interfaces circuits and systems. He or she has a strong background in one or more of the following areas: (i) analog circuits and techniques for ultra-low power, ranging from basic building blocks (e.g. amplifiers, filters) to silicon sensors, interfaces, and novel clock generation architectures; (ii) data converters enabled by new techniques, architectures, or circuit topologies; (iii) wireless transceiver and RF circuits for low-power and energy-efficient links, cellular connectivity including machine-to-machine applications, emerging broadband networks (5G), millimetre-wave and THz systems (radar, sensing and imaging); (iv) wireline communications circuits and systems for chip-to-chip communication, including serial links, high-speed memory, accelerator, peripheral interfaces, backplanes, long-haul, and powerline communications. Candidates should hold a PhD. A track record of successfully manufactured chips and systems is highly desirable. In addition, commitment to teaching and the ability to lead a research group are expected. Generally, at ETH Zurich undergraduate level courses are taught in German or English and graduate level courses are taught in English.

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Food Biotechnology

The assistant professorship will deal with mechanisms, modifications and applications of microbes and products thereof for enhancing the supply, quality, nutritional and health benefits of food, while minimizing the footprint on the environment. Novel technologies (e.g. genome editing) are poised to have significant effects on e.g. plant and microbial biotechnology, legislation and consumer acceptance.

The successful candidate is expected to lead world-class research on food microbes and ecosystems, combining state-of-the-art bioanalytical and molecular technologies, mechanistic understanding and bioprocessing. A major focus should be on microbes and ecosystems, which requires an in-depth understanding of molecular mechanisms and functions, for building the quality of food, optimising processes, translating technologies and benefiting human health. Additional prerequisites are a strong motivation and a commitment to teaching. The new assistant professor will be embedded in the department’s programme in Food Science and will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (German or English) as well as graduate level courses (English). The ability to lead a research group is required.

- Programming Languages and Software Engineering (language design and implementation, testing and debugging, compilers and language runtimes, programming models, dynamic languages)
- Human Computer Interaction (computational interaction, interactive machine learning, user and preference modelling, intelligent interactive systems, wearable technologies and continuous sensing, human-centered health, personalized medicine, assistive technologies, AR/VR, haptics, human-robot interaction)
- Data Science (machine learning, language/media processing, data privacy, data centers architecture and management, programming and runtime platforms for data centers and cloud computing, data science for HPC simulations, medical applications, quantified self, population-scale genomic medicine, educational data science)
- All other areas in Computer Science (while there is a focus on the three areas above, ETH Zurich is broadly looking in all areas)

Assistant Professor of Cellular Dynamics

Professor of Steel and Composite Structures
