Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Food Biotechnology


The Department of Health Sciences and Technology (www.hest.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich and its Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health, IFNH (www.ifnh.ethz.ch) invite applications for the above-mentioned position.

The area of food biotechnology is rapidly evolving with the emergence of technologies such as modeling, high throughput sequencing, and genome editing. It is poised to significantly advance our understanding of the crucial role of microbes along the food chain and for human health.

The assistant professorship will deal with physiological characterization, modifications and applications of microbes and their products with the goal of enhancing the supply, quality, safety and environmental sustainability of healthy and functional foods.

The successful candidate is expected to lead world-class research on food microbes and microbial ecosystems, combining state-of-the-art analytical and molecular methods and bioprocessing. A major focus should be on designing and engineering microbes, consortia and ecosystems for food-related applications.  In-depth understanding of molecular mechanisms and functions, as well as an ability to translate research findings to economy and society, are required. Knowledge of microbial and downstream-processing technologies is desirable.

Further prerequisites are a strong motivation and a commitment to teaching as well as the ability to lead a research group. The new assistant professor will be embedded in the department’s programme in Food Science and will be expected to contribute to teaching food biotechnology, including bioprocessing.

Assistant Professor of Tumor Heterogeneity


The Department of Biology (www.biol.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for an assistant professor position in the area of tumor heterogeneity and therapeutic applications.

The successful candidate is expected to integrate a broad spectrum of experimental and computational approaches to understand the basis of tumor heterogeneity in driving solid and/or hematologic cancers, define how heterogeneity arises and is maintained and shaped by distinct cell types/factors in the microenvironment. As part of her/his research program the successful candidate may also device novel therapeutic concepts in the context of cancer formation, evolution and drug resistance, including cellular therapies. Experimental approaches are expected to integrate a variety of methods such as single-cell genomics, lineage tracing and fate-mapping techniques as well as establishment of genetically-engineered murine and human tumor models through genome editing.

At the assistant professor level, commitment to teaching and the ability to lead a research group are expected. The new professor will engage and contribute to teaching of this key aspect of life/health sciences in the ‘Biology’, ‘Health Sciences and Technology’ and the new ‘Medicine BSc’ curricula. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree and have demonstrated excellent qualifications in education and research. We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense.

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Robotic Materials


The Department of Materials (www.mat.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position.

We are searching for excellent candidates to develop a world-leading research program in robotic materials, i.e. new materials with properties that enhance robotic functionality. The assistant professorship will represent the focus of an extensive ETH collaborative network, involving colleagues engaged in robotics and the human-robot interface in other departments. The successful candidate has an outstanding research record in either soft or hard materials, with a strong focus on applications, ideally in robotics. At the assistant professor level, commitment to teaching and the ability to lead a research group are expected. The new assistant professor must be an enthusiastic teacher, who will develop and teach courses in the Materials curriculum.

Professor of Architectural Redevelopment and Preservation


The Department of Architecture (www.arch.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position. The professorship is assigned to the Institute of Construction History and Preservation (IDB).

The new professor is called upon to impart to Bachelor and Master students the principles underlying architectonic design in the context of building redevelopment with special regard to the preservation of historic building fabric, along with the methodologies and expertise specific to these fields. Architectonic design necessarily calls for a fundamental interest in other disciplines and a readiness to integrate knowledge of them in one’s teaching approach. Cooperation with the Chair of Building Archaeology and Construction History is of particular importance.

The future professor contributes to further developing course content and research in light of current academic and scientific advancements. Research topics may lie in the field of architectural preservation and be pursued from an interdisciplinary perspective, for instance in combination with building archaeology, construction history, engineering, the humanities, the social sciences, or material development.

For the new professor, teaching consists primarily in giving lectures, supervising studio projects, and devising and accompanying study excursions. She or he supports the work of students and doctoral candidates on their respective theses while also taking an active role in developing the department overall, above and beyond the chair’s particular interests. Generally, at the Department of Architecture, undergraduate level courses are taught in German and graduate level courses in German or English.

The successful applicant is an excellent architect with a substantial portfolio in the building redevelopment field. She or he defends a clear theoretical position on the scope of preservation. She or he should furthermore be an internationally renowned personality with a proven international academic track record as well as relevant contacts and practical experience in the preservation field. Further requirements are a university degree, tried-and-tested professional capacities, and demonstrable leadership skills.

Professor of Energy Systems Analysis


The Departments of Mechanical and Process Engineering (www.mavt.ethz.ch) and Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (www.ee.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute (www.psi.ch) invite applications for a joint professorship in Energy Systems Analysis. The new professor will act as Head of the Energy Systems Analysis Laboratory at PSI, in a joint appointment with ETH Zurich. The professorship will be associated with one of the above-mentioned departments and will contribute to the teaching of ETH Zurich. The main research activities are centred at PSI.

This position gives the successful candidate the opportunity to closely engage in research efforts and collaborate with colleagues in two of the worldwide leading research institutions in the field of energy. Professor of Nuclear Safety


The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (www.mavt.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich and the Laboratory for Reactor Physics and Thermal Hydraulics at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Villigen (www.psi.ch) invite applications for a joint professorship in Nuclear Safety.

The new professor will lead, in a joint appointment with ETH Zurich, a research group for thermal fluid dynamics experiments and simulation at PSI, Switzerland’s nuclear centre of excellence, and will thus benefit from the access to the institute’s unique large-scale experimental facilities and analytical infrastructures. He or she should demonstrate an excellent international record of research accomplishments in the field of nuclear engineering and reactor safety, preferably with a focus on thermal fluid dynamics and/or heat and mass transfer. Experience in the related fields of reactor physics and nuclear materials, safety aspects of the decommissioning of nuclear power plants and waste conditioning and disposal technologies or similar, are very welcome.

The successful candidate is expected to establish an ambitious, world-class research programme at the interface between fundamental research and application, in particular related to the core areas of nuclear reactor safety. Specific focus of the research will be centred around experimental thermal fluid dynamics and advanced instrumentation combined with computational methods in order to address scientific issues related (but not limited) to multi-scale thermal-hydraulics phenomena, multi-physics simulations, code validation with uncertainty analysis, as well as applications to reactor/fuel design, accident analyses and spent fuel management.

The new professor should hold a Ph.D. or similar degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering, or a related field. A strong motivation and undisputable commitment to student education is a prerequisite. The candidate will be in charge of the coordination of the joint Nuclear Master Program between ETH Zurich and EPF Lausanne and will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (German or English) and graduate level courses (in English). Additional support by teaching assignments of senior scientists, in the supervision of master projects and access to research infrastructure is granted by PSI.

Soils and Terrestrial Ecosystems


The Department of Environmental Systems Science (www.usys.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position focusing on (1) physical processes controlling water, energy, and/or mass fluxes in the subsurface and (2) their implications for biogeochemical processes, organisms and/or ecosystems. Professor of Architecture and Urban Design


The Department of Architecture (www.arch.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position. The professorship is located at the Institute for Landscape and Urban Studies (LUS).

The future professor imparts students with the competency to conceptualise urban design tasks within their historic, cultural, and social contexts, and to meet these challenges with sophisticated spatial strategies and designs. She or he offers an urban design lecture for students in the Bachelor’s degree programme and design courses for students in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes (incl. master’s thesis supervision). The professor will be expected to supervise doctoral students, engage with continuing education programmes, and collaborate with chairs among the department. A particular focus in teaching and research is the development of spatial design methods and knowledge, and their translation into urban design practices. The language of instruction of undergraduate level courses (Bachelor’s degree course) should be German and of graduate level courses (Master’s degree course) German or English.

Successful applicants are internationally acclaimed with an acknowledged position in urban design practice and a significant contribution to the current discourse. They demonstrate a multiscalar, interdisciplinary and historically founded approach to urban design. They have knowledge on the contemporary (European) metropolis and the territorial dimension of urbanisation, the capacity to situate their own approach within wider urban design culture, and the ability to integrate issues of governance. Additional qualifications include a degree in architecture, urbanism or in a related field and experience, both in research and teaching in the academic context (bachelor and master) and in international collaborations. A strong interest in collaboration with colleagues within the Institute for Landscape and Urban Studies (LUS) is expected. Responsible leadership of a group of employees and the commitment to help develop the Department of Architecture beyond the boundaries of the own field of expertise are expected.
